Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county in north-west England. It encompasses one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United Kingdom and comprises of ten metropolitan boroughs: Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Manchester and Salford. Greater Manchester was created on 1 April 1974 as a result of the Local Government Act 1972; and designated a City Region on 1 April 2011.
The built-up area of Greater Manchester is the second biggest in the UK, covering an area of 493 square miles. It borders Cheshire, Derbyshire, West Yorkshire, Lancashire and Merseyside. There is a mix of all kinds of residential areas, from high density urban areas to suburbs and rural areas. Much of the area developed economically during the industrial revolution, particularly in textiles. While textile production came to an end, the area has continued to grow as they have adjusted to new industries. The former docks at Salford Quays have been redeveloped as a commercial and residential area, while the BBC have relocated to their new Media City complex in the same area.
