Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough within Greater Manchester, and is the third most-populous metropolitan area in the country. Manchester was a manorial township until the turn of the 19th century. It grew at an astonishing rate during the Industrial Revolution, as the area became a centre for textile manufacturing while the Manchester Ship Canal allowed Manchester to become a true inland port. Manchester was granted city status in 1853. The city declined in post-war years as manufacturing started to decline but in the wake of the IRA bombing in 1996 the city invested heavily in regeneration.

The city has vastly improved it's transport connections to become a hub for the North West of England, leading to massive investment by private industry.
